Common Broken Garage Door Problems and Repairs

Dec 3

Let's discuss the most frequently encountered issues and garage door repairs in Durham NC.

  • Broken Springs:

Garage door springs are engineered to allow a specific number of closing and opening times. They will eventually break, and if you're at home, you'll be able to see.

Garage doors pop up and emit an erupting sound, which is like fireworks. It could be risky trying to shut or open the garage door this early. The spring might still be stretched, which can cause the door to slide off its rails.

Do not try to open your garage door if the spring breaks. Instead, call and make an appointment with a garage door repair service right away. It is not advisable to enter your garage until it's been fixed.

  • Cables

Cables are prone to breaking by themselves due to regular wear and tear or pressures that are imposed on them when springs fail. The door's side might appear to "sag," if a cable is damaged. The door on the other side might appear heavier.

You might notice that the door may be tilted on one side, and lower on the other side when it opens. The door may not stay in place when it is opened if all of the cables are broken. Instead, as soon as you lift it up the door will fall down, posing a significant safety hazard.

  • Rollers Should Spin and Turn:

The rollers at the doors' edges must rotate and spin. If they become trapped in the process of sliding the door, it could fall off its tracks. It can be more difficult to close or open the door if it is stuck on rollers.

Keep the door closed if it has come off the rails in the open or closed position. If you attempt to close or open the door, the cables and springs may break as well. The tracks and rollers should be changed and cleaned when the door is making noise. Lack of lubrication or humidity are the most common causes for jammed rollers.

  • Door Closes and Reopens:

This issue can occur when the garage door opener needs to be set. Limit settings for the door control the open and close functions. They might require minor adjustments or resynchronization from time to time because of normal usage.

Limit settings tell the door the distance it must travel before it can be closed or opened fully. If they are off when the door strikes the ground, the sensors in the door detect it as hitting an object instead of the ground and the door opens again.

If something is in the way of the door sensors, this can also cause problems. The sensors located on either side of the garage or the interior wall will be found near the bottom of each door, approximately 4 to 6 inches above the ground. The sensors will permit the door to be opened if there is something in the way.

  • The Door Opener is Running However, the Door Isn't Moving:

Check to see if the disconnect cord for the automatic door opener is not pulled when opening and closing the door. You will need to reconnect the door to the lift arm to the automated opener if you can. This is another common problem. Check that your garage door is not locked.
